Introduction

The Brick Lane Jamme Masjid Madrasah is committed to providing a safe and healthy environment for all students, staff, and visitors. This policy outlines the responsibilities, procedures, and measures in place to ensure the health, safety, first aid, and overall well-being of everyone within the Brick Lane Jamme Masjid Madrasah premises.

Policy aim and objectives

The purpose of this health, safety, first aid, and wellbeing policy is to:

  • Promote a culture of safety and well-being throughout the Brick Lane Jamme Masjid Madrasah.
  • Prevent accidents, injuries, and illnesses through proactive measures.
  • Provide clear guidelines for first aid, emergency responses, and mental well-being.
  • Ensure compliance with UK health and safety laws and regulations.

Scope

This policy applies to:

  • All staff members, students, and volunteers.
  • Visitors, parents, and contractors on the Brick Lane Jamme Masjid Madrasah premises.
  • Activities conducted on-site or off-site under Brick Lane Jamme Masjid Madrasah supervision.

Health and safety responsibilities

Leadership responsibilities. The Headteacher and Trustee Board are responsible for:

  • Ensuring compliance with health and safety laws.
  • Regularly reviewing and updating this policy.
  • Providing resources for health and safety training and equipment.
  • Conducting regular risk assessments.

Staff responsibilities. All staff members are required to:

  • Follow health and safety procedures.
  • Report hazards, accidents, or incidents to the Headteacher immediately.
  • Supervise students to ensure their safety.

Student and parent responsibilities. Students and parents are expected to:

  • Follow safety instructions provided by staff.
  • Notify the Brick Lane Jamme Masjid Madrasah of any health conditions or concerns.

Child safety and supervision

  • Pupils will not be taken off the Brick Lane Jamme Masjid Madrasah premises without prior parental consent.
  • All activities will be assessed for safety, and appropriate measures will be implemented to mitigate risks.

First Aid and response to accidents

  • If an accident occurs resulting in injury to a pupil, staff will act promptly to provide assistance.
  • A fully stocked first aid box is kept in the Brick Lane Jamme Masjid Madrasah for emergencies.
  • A first-aid-trained staff member will be called to assist in the event of an injury.
  • If needed, emergency services will be contacted immediately.
  • For serious injuries, parents will be contacted using the emergency contact details held on record. These contact details are updated annually, and parents must notify us of any changes promptly.
  • All accidents, injuries, or illnesses will be recorded in an incident log.
  • Serious incidents will be reported to the relevant authorities, if required.

Physical restraint

On rare occasions, staff may need to physically restrain a pupil to prevent harm to themselves, others, or property, or to manage extreme disruption. Any physical restraint must involve the minimum force necessary and be carried out solely to ensure safety. All incidents of restraint will be documented and reviewed to ensure appropriateness.

Protection of identity

The names and identities of children attending the Brick Lane Jamme Masjid Madrasah are protected at all times. Staff are prohibited from disclosing information about any pupil to unauthorised persons, except those directly responsible for the child.

Collection procedures

Parents must notify staff in advance if someone other than themselves will be collecting their child. In such cases, parents are required to complete a collection authorisation form, available in the Brick Lane Jamme Masjid Madrasah office. If there is any uncertainty about the identity of the person collecting a child, staff will contact the parent or guardian to confirm authorisation before releasing the child.

Fire safety and evacuation procedures

The Brick Lane Jamme Masjid has established clear procedures to follow in the event of an emergency, such as a fire or bomb alert, requiring the building to be evacuated. Emergency drills are conducted at least twice a year to ensure preparedness.

Fire extinguishers and alarms will be checked and maintained regularly.

Evacuation procedures will be clearly displayed, and staff will be trained in fire safety protocols.

All staff and pupils are trained and familiar with these procedures. They are aware of their designated exit routes, assembly points, and the roll call process to account for everyone's safety during an evacuation.

Risk assessment and hazard management

Regular risk assessments will be conducted to identify and mitigate potential hazards.

Staff will be trained to recognize and address risks effectively.

Any identified hazards will be addressed promptly, and mitigation measures will be implemented.

Premises security

Staff must be alert to any unfamiliar individuals on the premises. The Brick Lane Jamme Masjid Madrasah door will not be opened to unknown visitors unless their identity and purpose are verified.

Under no circumstances will a child be released to an individual other than their parent or guardian unless prior written permission has been provided and agreed upon.

Safeguarding and health links

Health and safety are closely tied to safeguarding. The Brick Lane Jamme Masjid Madrasah ensures:

  • Safeguarding procedures are integrated into health and safety practices.
  • Staff are trained to recognise and address any safeguarding concerns.

  • Providing a supportive and inclusive environment.
  • Encouraging open communication about well-being concerns.
  • Offering resources or referrals for mental health support.
