Faith and belonging in the East End
Situated in one of the most multicultural areas in the country, the masjid is an integral part of Britain's religious and cultural landscape — a place of worship, and a symbol of the contribution of Muslims to the wider community.
Brick Lane Jamme Masjid is an integral part of Britain's diverse religious and cultural landscape. Situated in East London, one of the most multicultural areas in the country, the Masjid reflects the dynamic and evolving nature of British society. It stands as both a place of worship and a symbol of the contribution of Muslims to the wider community.
That contribution is written into the very fabric of the building. The same corner of Spitalfields has received wave after wave of newcomers to Britain — Huguenot weavers, Jewish families from Eastern Europe, and the Bengali Muslim community who today make this masjid their spiritual home. Each generation has helped to shape the East End, and the masjid stands as a living symbol of Britain's evolving identity.
The Masjid is committed to promoting positive civic engagement. It encourages individuals to take an active role in society, contributing in ways that are constructive, respectful, and beneficial to others. This includes participation in community initiatives, charitable activities, and local engagement.
A key aspect of the Masjid's role is fostering mutual respect and understanding. It seeks to build positive relationships with people of all backgrounds, promoting dialogue and cooperation. This approach reflects the Islamic values of respect, justice, and peaceful coexistence. The Masjid also plays a role in promoting community cohesion — by bringing people together and encouraging shared values, it helps to strengthen the social fabric of the area, working to address misconceptions, reduce barriers, and promote a balanced understanding of Islam.
As part of British society, the Masjid operates within a framework of law and shared civic responsibility. It upholds the values of lawfulness, respect, and accountability, recognising the importance of contributing positively to the country in which it is based. It is also mindful of the experiences and challenges faced by the Muslim community, seeking to provide support, guidance, and reassurance, and helping individuals to navigate their identity and role within a wider society.
"A confident, engaged, and responsible community — maintaining faith and identity while contributing positively to the broader society."
