May Allah grant them mercy

When someone passes away

At Brick Lane Funeral Service, we understand that the passing of a loved one is a deeply emotional time. This guide gently walks you through each step, combining Islamic rites with the legal requirements for a burial in the UK.

Please do not feel you must face the days ahead alone. From the very first phone call, our team is here to take the weight of arrangements from your shoulders — so that you and your family can grieve, pray, and be present with one another. The steps below explain what happens, and when.

Step by step

From passing to burial

A clear path through the practical and the sacred — at a pace that respects your grief.

1 · Immediately after death

In hospital, the doctor issues a Medical Certificate of Cause of Death (MCCD). At home, in a care home or hospice, a GP confirms the death; expected deaths receive an MCCD, while unexpected deaths may involve a Coroner and a possible post-mortem.

2 · Contact us

Contact Brick Lane Funeral Service. We collect the deceased from hospital, home or elsewhere, advise on documentation, and arrange Ghusl (washing), Kafan (shrouding) and the Janāzah.

3 · Obtain the certificate

The MCCD confirms the cause of death and is required before the death can be registered.

4 · Register the death

Registration is required within 5 days in England (unless Coroner-referred), at the local Register Office. You will receive the Death Certificate(s), the Certificate for Burial ("Green Form"), and a Tell Us Once reference number.

5 · Islamic preparation

Ghusl (ritual washing) and Kafan (shrouding) are carried out in accordance with Islamic guidelines. Family involvement is welcomed and available.

6 · The Janāzah prayer

The funeral prayer is performed in congregation before burial — at Brick Lane Jamme Masjid, or an agreed alternative.

7 · Burial arrangements

We coordinate with the cemetery. The Green Form and a burial confirmation are required to proceed.

8 · Our team will

Arrange transport, prepare the grave in accordance with Islamic requirements, and support your family throughout.

9 · Day of burial

The Janāzah prayer is performed, the deceased is transported to the cemetery, and burial follows the Sunnah — with family and community sharing in the placing of soil and du'ā.

10 · After burial

Death certificates are used for legal and financial matters; the Tell Us Once service notifies government departments; and families may arrange ongoing du'ā, charity (Sadaqah) or remembrance gatherings.

Important notes

If the death is referred to the Coroner, additional steps or delays may occur, and a post-mortem may be required in certain circumstances. Early contact with our service helps minimise delays and ensures Islamic rites are prioritised.

Documents you will need

It helps to have these ready. Our team will guide you if anything is unclear.

· Medical Certificate of Cause of Death (MCCD)

· The deceased's full name, date of birth, address, occupation and marital status, and NHS number if available

· Green Form (Certificate for Burial)

· Burial booking confirmation

"From the moment of death through to burial and beyond, we aim to provide a compassionate, efficient, and faith-led service that honours your loved one with dignity."
